For a season there must be pain –
For a little, little space
I shall lose the sight of her face,
Take back the old life again
While She is at rest in the place.
For a season this pain must endure,
For a little, little while
I shall sigh more often than smile
Till Time shall work me a cure,
And the pitiful days beguile.
For that season we must be apart,
For a little length of years,
Till my life's last hour nears,
And, above the beat of my heart,
I hear Her voice in my ears.
But I shall not understand –
Being set on some later love,
Shall not know her for whom I strove,
Till she reach me forth her hand,
Saying, "Who but I have the right?"
And out of a troubled night
Shall draw me safe to the land.
– Rudyard Kipling

Not a Day Goes By that I Don't Think of You
Not a day goes by that I don't think of you.
They say I should move on, but tell me, where?
Where such love as I have shared with you,
Such sweetness from such joy so many years?
There has to be some room for storing sorrow,
Some place to keep one's undivided pain,
Where past can still be present, though in shadow,
And I can hold you in my arms again.
Ah, darling! We will be together always,
Though you are gone, and I must live alone.
Time is nothing but an open window
To things more real, which you and I have known.
When we were married, we became one flesh;
So now in me you'll not return to dust.

I often found poems or quotes online that made me think of Gretchen. So I'd often open up my graphics program and create cards or pictures for her. This is one I did a year or so ago. No special occassion, I just wanted to let her know she was first in my life, even if I didn't tell her every day.

This part of your post
"No special occassion, I just wanted to let her know she was first in my life, even if I didn't tell her every day "
Believe me G, I'm sure she knew.
It came accross in the everyday little things you two shared. The cards and the heartfelt words were just the icing on the cake; sweet reminders of what I'm sure she already felt in her heart.

Someone left this poem for me at the gravesite, don't know who. It was in an envelope with my name on it. To whoever left it, thank you so much, the timing couldn't have been better
Should You Go First Should you go first and I remain
To walk the road alone,
I'll live in memory's garden, dear,
With happy days we've known.
In Spring I'll wait for roses red,
When fades the lilac blue,
In early fall when brown leaves fall
I'll catch a glimpse of you.
Should you go first and I remain
For battles to be fought.
Each thing you've touched along the way
Will be a hallowed spot.
I'll hear your voice, I'll see your smile.
Though blindly I may grope,
The memory of your helping hand
Will buoy me on with hope,
Should you go first and I remain
To finish with the scroll,
No length'ning shadows shall creep in
To make this life seem droll.
We've known so much happiness,
We've had our cup of joy,
And memory is one gift of God
That death cannot destroy.

There are battles still to be fought, and writing of the scroll you've begun,
The blessings you had together were wonderful, but there are still blessings to behold for
One.
