Saying Goodbye to the Clonker! :(

30 May 2008

This past week Alison finally decided to get rid of her old car. Well it was past the point of being repaired anymore as the costs would have been more than it would be to buy a newer one. We all know how hard it is sometimes to part with what after a time become something of an old friend as we spend so much time behind the wheels of these things, and I’m sure a lot of stories to tell too. Well you know she was attached to hers as she took pictures of it being loaded up and hauled away! :) Can’t blame her though, I know how it feels as I drove my last two until they wouldnt move anymore!

I’m just thankful I did get one ride in it while I was there in Cyprus. Also thankful it was JUST one ride!!!  ;) LOL

NEVER BRING PLANTS INTO THE HOUSE!

28 May 2008

Garden Grass Snakes also known as Garter Snakes (Thamnophissirtalis) can be dangerous. Yes, grass snakes, not rattlesnakes.

Here’s why.

A couple in Sweetwater, Texas, had a lot of potted plants. During a recent cold spell, the wife was bringing a lot of them indoors to protect them from a possible freeze.

It turned out that a little green garden grass snake was hidden in one of the plants and when it had warmed up, it slithered out and the wife saw it go under the sofa.

She let out a very loud scream.

The husband (who was taking a shower) ran naked into the living room to see what the problem was. She told him there was a snake under the sofa.

He got down on the floor on his hands and knees to look for it. About that time the family dog came and cold-nosed him on the behind.

He thought the snake had bitten him, so he screamed and fell over on the floor.
His wife thought he had a heart attack, so she covered him up, told him to lie still and called an ambulance.

The attendants rushed in, wouldn’t listen to his protests and loaded him on the stretcher and started carrying him out.

About that time the snake came out from under the sofa and the Emergency Medical Technician saw it and dropped his end of the stretcher.

That’s when the man broke his leg and why he is still in the hospital.

The wife still had the problem of the snake in the house, so she called on a neighbor man.

He volunteered to capture the snake. He armed himself with a rolled-up newspaper and began poking under the couch. Soon he decided it was gone and told the woman, who sat down on the sofa in relief.

But while relaxing, she dangled her hand in between the cushions, where she felt the snake wriggling around. She screamed and fainted and the snake rushed back under the sofa.

The neighbor man, seeing her lying there passed out, tried to use CPR to revive her.

The neighbor’s wife, who had just returned from shopping at the grocery store, saw her husband’s mouth on the woman’s mouth and slammed her husband in the back of the head with a bag of canned goods, knocking him out and cutting his scalp so that he needed
stitches.

The noise woke the woman from her dead faint and she saw her neighbor lying on the floor with his wife bending over him, so she assumed that he had been bitten by the snake. She went to the kitchen and got a small bottle of whiskey, and began pouring it down the man’s throat.

By now the police had arrived.

They saw the unconscious man, smelled the whiskey, and assumed that a drunken fight had occurred. They were about to arrest them all, when the women tried to explain how it all happened over a little green snake.

The police called an ambulance, which took away the neighbor and his sobbing wife.

The little snake again crawled out from under the sofa.

One of the policemen drew his gun and fired at it.

He missed the snake and hit the leg of the end table. The table fell over and the lamp on it shattered and as the bulb broke it started a fire in the drapes.

The other policeman tried to beat out the flames, and fell through the window into the yard on top of the startled family dog who, jumped out and raced into the street where an oncoming car swerved to avoid the dog and smashed into the parked police car.

Meanwhile, the burning drapes were seen by the neighbors who called the fire department.

The firemen had started raising the fire truck ladder when they were halfway down the street.

The rising ladder tore out the overhead wires and put out the electricity and disconnected the telephones in a ten-square city block area. (But they did get the house fire out).

Time passed and both men were discharged from the hospital, the house was repaired, the dog came home, the police were issued a new car, and all was right with their world.

Several days later they were watching TV and the weatherman announced a cold snap for that night. The wife asked her husband if he thought they should bring in their plants for the night.

That’s when he shot her.

I-129F posted! :)

28 May 2008

I-129F signed and sealed! For those not knowing what an I-129F is, its my petition to the USCIS (United States Citizenship and Immigration Services) to bring Alison to the US on what’s commonly known as a K1 fiancee visa! :)  We have been working the last few weeks to get all the paperwork together and filling out forms to get ball rolling.

Today marks a very special day in that on May 28, 2008 at 10:16 Posted!! :) AM the package was certified and now on its merry way to the Vermont processing center! :) Well I guess its not officially filed yet until it gets there and signed for(yes I sent it certified) , but this single step is such an amazing moment for us when all our plans are finally beginning to take some concrete steps. There has never been a doubt between us that we would be together, its just a long impatient wait as there are so many other factors involved in a move on this grand scale. I do feel a lot of anxiousness passed now as its been an ordeal just preparing the application. The main thing  was trying to make sure everything is done properly and nothing left out. I had this awful dread of forgetting something that would hold up the approval (I’m thinking positive that it’s going to be approved and wont let any other thought in my head ) I have triple checked over everything and made one last check this morning, notifying of Alison by text of just about each step too! lol I just know how these govt people want things done and its silly things they sometimes want done where common sense should prevail, but what can we do but go along. Well I feel confident ours will be verified to be a genuine case of wanting to be together in the same country and married as soon as we can! Officially that is, in my heart she is my wife already :)  God joined us together and to me there is no higher authority!  ;)

They say this part of the process is the one taking the most time and work to get in order as of course with all that is going on in the world they are scrutinizing everyone and everything. Well it’s been an anxious time for us trying to just decipher the instructions of the form and making sure we have everything without feeling overwhelmed. Our first time looking into all this that was the case for both of us I think, feeling overwhelmed. We still have a long way to go of course but this is the most difficult part with this petition and her getting the visa. Once its approved they will notify the American Embassy there in Nicosia and set up a meeting and interview with Alison and then she will have her own set of tasks to complete and prepare a package for them there. She will have to have a background police check done from everywhere she has lived. Since she is a Brit she will have to get a clearance from the Sunderland police where she was living there, and one from Limassol, Cyprus where she has been living since leaving the UK. Well she has applied already for both of them ahead of time so she is well in advance of getting things done. I know she already has all her papers ready, birth certificate etc.. and the only thing I think that she will really have to wait for after the initial interview is the medical exam to certify she has a clean bill of health for entering the US. Not sure why really as how many thousands of people a day fly into the US and come to visit and Lord know what some of them may be carrying! :o) well anyway its something has to be done. Well that should be a simple thing to get, just taking the time to set up the Dr’s appointment at the physician of their choosing. And then once that is all done she will go back and they will issue her the visa. I *think* the visa is good for 6 months from then to use, and once she arrives in the US we have only 90 days to get married. Well we are ready today but it would be nice to have time to plan a nice wedding, and of course we will!! I can’t wait for it! :)  but I feel its possible we may have to arrange a quick civil ceremony near her arriving to make it official per the terms of the visa. And then from there its still a matter of applying again for resident status and all the other things go with being a US resident, social security, drivers license etc.. well one thing at a time and we will get it all sorted. I just cant wait for the day my wife to be gets off that plane and into my arms! :) We’ll keep you updated on the progress of things and where we stand as time goes by. Just send a prayer things go smooth and quick for us, we are sooooo ready to be together, you just can’t imagine! :) love you baby! XXXXXXXX

on the way to the PO!

Memorial Day weekend Traffic

24 May 2008

Memorial Day weekend traffic Saturday afternoon. Its a bit lighter this year, probably because of gas prices!

Solar light

24 May 2008

Just a test shot from my iPhone of these new solar lights I bought today :) Arent you glad you wasted a few seconds to see this?!

Feedjit

24 May 2008

I was reading my friend Mike’s blog, The Top of Texas Gazette, the other day and he had found this very cool widget from Feedjit. Its a live traffic feed widget to add to your website, and though its not giving you as much information as a full fledged tracking tool such as Google Analytics, its really a great tool to see quickly where your traffic is coming from and it works very close to real time, well with each page refresh. Mike’s always having some really clever finds posted to his blog as well as a lot of humour, good music, great photo blog posts and even the serious posts as well, a little something for everyone there in the panhandle of Texas, so have a look sometime. ;) Tell him G sent you

The widget is easily customised to incorporate it into your own site or blog. Its a handy tool to see at a quick glance where your traffic is coming from. As he mentioned in his post, he knows where his friends live so he can see at a glance who has dropped by and the same with me, If I see a hit from Lemesos, Cyprus, and I know fairly well thats my baby or one of her friends, and of course Amarillo, Texas is likely Mike. But generally the cities that show are I am guessing where the local traffic from the surrounding areas is routed to. For instance I know he doesnt live in Amarillo, just its the closest relay to him. (I dont know if relay is the correct term but I’m using it ;)! ) Its pretty neat and pretty accurate too. The only thing I can see is it only will show where you came from if you actually select a direct link form some site, just typing in the address wont show up, neither will it show where you left off to unless its a link on the site you are on. . Well its still a great tool I think and I was going to add it to our site on blogger, but my baby beat me to it! Oh she’s getting good now with this sort of thing :) Well I like to think I am teaching her some things , but I think she picks up things a lot better than she lets on ;) It doesnt seem to add much time to loading a page either which is nice, as I already probably have just a few too many things there in the right column as it is increasing the load times and the overall consensus is already saying WordPress is a bit slow to begin with.

I mentioned above about it not showing actually the city you are living in but where the connection is made to the internet. In my case I live very near t the coast of northeastern North Carolina in a town called Grandy. the first time I saw the feed on Mike’s site it has me in Raleigh, NC and yesterday it was showing me in Kenly, NC and today its saying Lillington, NC. Well I have never even heard of either Kenly or Lillington!Well I had to look them up then to see where they were.

Map image

This pin on the far left is Lillington, the next one to it is Kenly and the one in the upper right is where I actually live so you can see its really not so accurate but only to a good size area. Not that it makes a difference really as you know generally when its someone you already know pretty well.  (I love this map feature in Live Writer by the way)

The biggest advantage it has is you can see at a glance when you have had some hits from say a search engine or another blog and what people are actually reading on your site.

Military Slavery Still Rampant in the world

22 May 2008

Conscription = Servitude = Slavery

“It is debasing human dignity to force men to give up their life, or to inflict death against their will, or without conviction as to the justice of their action. The State which thinks itself entitled to force its citizens to go to war will never pay proper regard to the value and happiness of their lives in peace. Moreover, by conscription the militarist spirit of aggressiveness is implanted in the whole male population at the most impressionable age. By training for war men come to consider war as unavoidable and even desirable.”

Anti-Conscription Manifesto 1926 — signed among others by Henri Barbusse, Annie Besant, Martin Buber, Edward Carpenter, Miguel de Unamuno, Georges Duhamel, Albert Einstein, August Forel, M.K. Gandhi, Kurt Hiller, Toyohiko Kagawa, George Lansbury, Paul Löbe, Arthur Ponsonby, Emanuel Rádl, Leonhard Ragaz, Romain Rolland, Bertrand Russell, Rabindranath Tagore, Fritz von Unruh, H.G. Wells

”Conscription subjects individual personalities to militarism. It is a form of servitude. That nations routinely tolerate it, is just one more proof of its debilitating influence.” :

Against Conscription and the Military Training of Youth  1930— signed among others by Albert Einstein, Sigmund Freud, H.G. Wells, Bertrand Russell and Thomas Mann  http://www.peace.ca/manifestoagainstconscription.htm

Now before anyone accuses of me of being anti military, I’m not. I appreciate all the sacrifices that our service people make to protect and defend this country and to aid those in need as well. And in general I am usually not vocal at all when it comes to these sort of things. With this country not having any mandatory military service any longer, to be honest I havent even considered the idea that it still occurs in so many other countries and to be perfectly honest wouldnt be writing about it now I dont think, if it werent for the fact  my fiancee’s son, JM,  is in the midst of now dealing with this antiquated and narrow minded system.

JM is a very clever and hard studying student and has been seriously planning a career in aviation,  a pilot,  now for the last two years, having enrolled in the RAF cadets program at the UK bases in Akrotiri around 16 months ago I am thinking. He has excelled in it and has had many opportunities through the cadets, and this last year received a scholarship to go to one of the bases in the UK where he had his first solo flight, from take off to landing! How many 16 year olds in this country or any other really can say they have given that much effort to a lifetime carreer? I have to laugh thinking of myself now when I was 16 and not even thinking about the next day, much less what I would do for a living! I admire him very much for his determination and his abilities. Proud of him too!  well he is at the end of school now and at a time he should have already been applying to university and seeking financial aid, here these things are done generally at the start of the senior year of high school and the students have a very good idea of what they need as far as finances and the like. Well there in Cyprus when a young man reaches 18 and is out of school he must enroll in a mandatory military service for a certain period of time, officially 25 months according to the web site of the Ministry of Defence. Well there are shorter times of service  reported in other various sites and quotes by officials ranging from a few weeks to 16 months, depending on circumstances. Well heres where the confusion starts. Of course like anyone ready to get his life started in his chosen profession, he would love to be able to apply to a few of these schools and begin to sort the financing, but he cant do anything specific as far as setting a date as the Army wont tell him a thing other than he cant get out of service until he is enrolled is their official statement upon each and every inquiry. Well there is a long list of meetings between the army recruiters and JM and Alison, as they began near a year ago just trying to get some idea of a decision and a specific date , Well not only for JM’s sake to get into school or start to work this summer to earn some money for what is going to be a very expensive tuition for this sort of career, but also for Alison and I to have an idea when we can begin to set a date for ourselves to be together too. Its one thing to be separated by this distance but being in limbo of the time we know is coming is just a hard ache to bear. And then there is JM’s anxiety too, heres this fine young man, so very capable of being whatever he wants to be stuck in just the same limbo, not having a clue when he can even start on his journey to what should be an exciting if nervous time in his life. He is waiting for answers too. When they first approached the army to inquire ahead of time to save the wait, they were told to first write a letter to the Minister stating their case and it would be reviewed and a decision would be made, well a month later when thy said it would be, a second visit and numerous calls had them writing yet another letter and restating things a different way, giving the urgency now of Alison leaving the country in very short time. Well another month is passed and still nothing, so Alison is getting perturbed now ( oh these people just dont know how much patience Alison is giving these idiots!) Well then after that its a trip to the main  offices in Nicosia for a meeting, and they come back from that with even less an idea only being told the case is being reviewed :( Oh but now they are starting to say he can only be released from service after he’s enrolled! Oh theres universal government brilliance at work there, cant take someone out of the system if they aren’t in it! :o) Well now its seeming that is the official answer each time, well if it can be called an answer, they still have been giving no indication of a time or what length of service he may have to do.  Nor can he legally leave the country without being scrutinized like someone trying to hide from the system and they even have it if he does leave the country without proper procedures at his age, he could be arrested on returning and placed into service that very day of coming back! Well of course he wants to go back to visit Cyprus at some point, he was born there and part of his family is there. Well its just a mess all around as Alison of course would find it hard to leave JM there alone, as how would he live and where and just those simple things. Oh there is something seriously wrong when a family cannot plan to make some changes in there life such as to relocate to another country or get an education! Now this is not an attack on Cyprus, I love the country and would be there now if it were possible. Just these bureaucrats are making this a right mess for everyone. Well there are so many people who are just not even paying mind to the service and sneaking out one way or another, some going through the Northern areas to get out, some just leaving on trips and not returning, or planning to return! Well we all want to go through the proper channels to make it right, but just like everywhere the right way is the most difficult and most expensive. No wonder the world is in the state its in.

Well I will put more to this later, my baby is just getting home now from Akrotiri taking JM to cadets so I will meet her at the door and give her a welcome home kiss, ok I know I’m 5000 miles away, but the Internet is one lovely invention! thanks Al Gore! LOL

“In This Life”

I know my dreams have come true :)

Alison Michelle photo retouch

21 May 2008

DSC00992a One of my hobbies is restoring and retouching/enhancing photos and portraits. Now combine that with the fact my beautiful bride to be is 5000 miles away I tend to work a lot on pictures of her! :) I guess in some sense its a touch from far away, well it is for me, each one of the photos is a memory of some event shared between between us, or from some event we attend in our respective countries, but still share them to let the other feel they are joining in the day to day activities. I find myself many nights sitting in front of the pc and looking through all the many we have and often times open up my Paint Shop program and just play around a bit seeing the different effects and moods I can create. And also in some way only those in a long distance relationship can understand, to touch the woman I love! :)

Well tonight I found one that just seemed to be calling to me to open up and do just that. This particular one is cropped from a larger photo, ad i replaced the background and then just gave it a few fixes here and there, these photo filter plugins can really give a normal digital photo a professional look too it. Well I’m not trying to brag, just saying even a regular pic without any other work on can be much improved just applying one of these filters using the default settings. I do ten though to do a few more things first, such as removing a busy background and adding one to focus the attention on the subject, not that my attention is ever long from Alison! ;)

Oh I may get myself in trouble now as I cant remember off hand now what the date was this picture was taken, I want to say late September or early October of last year. It was a wedding she was going to attend and she took a few pics before she went.

Here’s the original… Well not that she doesnt have a lovely home, DSC00992I just thought the plant and the part of the kitchen showing was taking away from over all look of the photo, and I was just wanting all my attention on her :) Well I hope she’s not minding me using the picture, at least its photographic proof of a sort that I was thinking of her tonight! ( Hi baby, I Love you! XXX)

Well its not really hard to do these if you have had a bit of practice. most of the work is done using layers in the program, well like stacking parts of photos over top of another if you will, except the areas fo some are transparent and what lies underneath shows through those parts. So basically all I did in this one was to add a layer beneath this original and fill it with colour using two shades, the darker around the edges and the lighter bit behind here, just a sort of emphasis and a basic photo backdrop. then I went to the original layer and just erased everything but her. The most time of course is doing the fine lines close to her, which is where I get to have the feeling I am touching her in a sense, so that part takes time and to be honest i am taking my time doing it, I love to lala! ;)  lol well once all the bits not her are removed I simply merge the layers and then go about sorting the colour levels and lighting and deciding what kind of effect i want. In the case of this one it, I basically left it as it was and just maybe added a bit of warmth to it and a just a very slight blur to give it that bit fo a dreamy feeling is what I call it. :)  Anyway just thought I would share with the world what I ahve been up to this evening and now I better go and write my love’s morning mail or she will soon be up and wondering where I am!! Well I think she knows by now I sometimes get sidetracked either with pictures or on YouTube. :)

Google Friend Connect

17 May 2008

I was just reading this post from ZDNet, Google launches Friend Connect with mixed reviews , and it caught my interest. Well first as a site owner its an ideal way to make just about any site into a social site very quickly and easily. Well they always say easy don’t they, copy and paste some code, etc… well it should work on most sites that allow you to edit html and allow iframes. Friend Connect was just launched a couple of days ago. It’s not being released yet to the public, but there is a preview release sign up link to add your name to the list on their site (remember doing this with GMail?! That turned out to be a pretty good venture I think! ) There’s a preview video, a couple of example sites set up, as well as it already being integrated in one or two existing sites. it looks very promising to me. well not just as something to make your site easily a social one, but one that opens up the web to possiblilites we haven’t yet imagined. it will be more than a passive web in that regard. Imagine just having to remember one or two identities and passwords! And being able to share what you do on one site with another, or not. as you see fit… I welcome it personally as long as we still have the ability to stand back and be a passive user too and not become just a statistic on some hit counter or how deep I followed the links on some ad goal set up on a website… ok that all happens anyway, signed in to anything or not~ ;) But I do like the idea of it and have always been a proponent of the OpenID movement. Just makes sense and makes things simple.. I like simple :)  Of course this being the launch of something new, it will be a work in progress and it seems for now its a bare bones sort of thing with not much control on the aesthetics and tying it into your sites look, but I’m sure as development goes forward we will be able to integrate it seamlessly in a spot on our pages. I’m impressed a lot here lately with the way these large companies now are finally beginning to realise the enduser is fed up of having to feel like he or she has to choose one place over another as their favourite social site, there are always those diehards who will praise myspace over Facebook or vice versa,, well each has its own followers, just they cant interact, well couldn’t i should say. I did see the other day that its now possible to add your Myspace profile and comments to your Facebook profile, and again vice versa. Well that alone was great for me. Oh I am not a big fan of either of them really, but I have family here in the US that uses only Myspace and then Alison and her family and friends are all on Facebook there in the European Union. Well now whichever site I am on I can see at a glance if a new comment has been added to the other.. well i should say it worked a few days ago. As of yesterday Facebook has now banned Google from accessing it so I dont know if thats affected the Facebook/Myspace connection in any way or not. Facebook is saying its protecting its users info as the reason. Well in my opinion thats up to the user isnt it, Facebook is very big on these third party apps to add things to your profile and each one you add is accessing that same info if you opt in to use it. whats the difference? I want to opt in to Friend Connect. I think in this case Facebook has put up a wall that may keep the info in, but it wont keep its users inside for long when they all realise its a whole new web out there. ( shades of the Aol broswer anyone?) Well i will be following this closely and cant wait until its available. I’ll be able to keep up nicely with all my friends, all 7 or 8 of them   LOL ;)
