What happened to #1?

That’s the first thing that came to mind on finding this shopping list at work one day.

I’ve accumulated quite a few of these shopping lists lately with the intentions of posting them, just havent had a lot of time to mess with the blog lately with all thats been going on, married life being verrrrrry good! :)

I’ve really not found any lists lately that were much out of the ordinary but I do find quite a few of these lists and always find them fascinating to read and oft times trying to imagine just the sort of people they are who write these things by the different characteristics of the lists
grocery list #2Today’s list is “Grocery List #2″ Again the question is what happened to number one and was it the first draft of this list or a second round of shopping for the day?!

Well it’s obviously been an “add on” list as there are three ink colours used. Other than that not much out of the ordinary except the missing first list. Looks like there is going to be a few people eating hotdogs if they need +15. And its never easy making the hotdog buns and the number of hotdogs to work out evenly anyway is it. All a plot if you ask me to increase sales on either of the products, usually the bread isnt it.  I suppose this could be a list for a quick lunch and then something for dinner afterwards. Or maybe its a cook out and they are making their own coleslaw with the cabbage, hard to tell from this list, but it could be with the final addition of “mayo” at the end, although cornbread does go very well with cabbage on its own.And the bag of potatoes could be either for fries(chips to the Brits) or for boiling with the cabbage. It really looks a hodgepodge of a list. Oatmeal is tossed in right at the middle of the list, well something should be healthy on any list, oatmeal it is then. They’ss need it for the cholesterol levels ;)

I guess any kind of beer will do as its not specified, but then again we all have our preferences and the word “beer” has only one meaning to each of us doesnt it? My beer is Miller Lite, or Coors lite if I want a bit oif change. I used to drink Stroh’s all the time in my earlier years. I had a letter once from Peter Stroh. I’m not even sure how I got it actually. It was in the days I was running this small supermarket in northeastern NC and was the gocery buyer as well as the one authorizing the beer vendors and all that and I remmebr receving this letter, signed even, thanking me for liking his beer and supporting him!  I wonder whatever happened to the letter. I generaly save everything being the packrat I am. It may be around here somewhere, but its likely lost in a jumble of old newspapers or it hit the trash heap years ago. Well nevermind, it was still nice to have received the letter. I think Stroh’s when out of business a decade or so ago. I always thought it was a nice beer. Well truth is, from the time I was 18 until I was 24 all beer was nice! LOL I rememebr during the tough times when we were broke we used to go to this old service station that always had a sale going on those small cans of Rolling Rock by the case. we’d collect enough soda bottles during the week to pick up a case or two of rolling rock and stored it in the trunk of the car! Hot Rolling Rock beer is not the tstiest stuff , but it worked ;)

  1. I used to make grocery store lists so I wouldn’t forget anything, then when I got to the store I’d find I had forgotten the list! Now I just wander down the aisles so I won’t forget anything. (but I usually do anyway)

I think List #1 was published quite some time ago in an earlier version of GD.

Never been a beer drinker, not like some of my friends. I do like Rolling Rock though and is what I usually buy; that, or Icehouse, which doesn’t taste all that good but has a high alcohol content. Truth be known, the first one is the one that doesn’t taste all that good, but by the second and third my taste buds are pretty well numb.

  2. I’m not really a beer drinker, and really all the booze you have been mentioning in the post the Brits would refer to as lager which is really light tasting compared to a real pint of bitter served back in the UK , I tend to be more of a wine or spirit drinker ( not in large quantities may I add ) and usually have either a shot of Ouzo turned into a long drink with Sprite or 7-up or I love to have a Brandy / Coke now and again in the evening .

Getting back to the main subject of your post ,Its got to be someone preparing for a cookout or feeding a family like the Waltons , oh but it sounded good ,well 15 hotdogs was not that many really , some men I know can eat 3 dogs at a time ,and admittedly I can also …depending on the size of the hotdog of course , we can buy some real good tasty German brand here in NC that I couold possibly eat even 4 ; )

I havent heard of that Rolling rock beer you mentioned , bet you were certainly rolling after a few crates of that stuff , I will have to go and sort through some of the stuff you have hoarded and see if I can find the special letter you mentioned receiving from the brewers it must be yellow with age now and falling to pieces, but it would be nice to see it .

  3. I love hot dogs; we have a place here in town called “Coney Island” that’s been a landmark since way before I was born. (there’s a couple posts about it in my blog)

There used to be a pool hall right across the street and on Saturdays I would go with my dad; he played “Moon”, a dominoes game and was very good at it. (It’s one of the ways he picked up his spending money) He’d give me a dollar when we got there and I’d play pool for an hour, drink a Coke and have a pkg. of peanuts until noon, then he’d give me a five dollar bill to go across the street and eat. (“Bring back the change!” he’d admonish.)

My brother-in-law and I went along with him one Saturday and he and I ate over a dozen hot dogs each.

Funny about the beer; that’s been the basis of most of the arguments between Brits and Americans. Most of the British guys would disparage American beers and for the most part I’d have to agree with them…it does pretty much taste like water after you’ve been used to drinking stouts and the like. Rolling Rock has a little more flavor/flavour to it and the Icehouse is also a lager, but as I said, has more alcohol content.

Texas makes some decent beer; Lone Star isn’t that good, but Shiner makes all sorts of beer. We had a lot of German settlers here and they brought their brewing expertise with them.

I bought a six pk. of Icehouse about five/six weeks ago and there’s still four left in the fridge. Big drinker, huh? I can feel the effect after one, be tipsy after two and if I have three or more, I’m sloshin’.

Used to drink Foster’s Lager (Australian beer), not so much for the taste, but because I could take a flat file and file the top off, smooth it with some emery cloth and make an excellent iced tea “glass” out of it.

I really like some Chinese beers, along with a Japanese brand or two. The German missionaries to China learned how to make beer there, I’ve read.

Talking about hot dogs and beer has made me hungry/thirsty. I can’t decide whether to go to the Coney or order a pizza so I can have a beer with it!
